Perhaps, though starting at $500 it is much more expensive than the eeepc. I know you get a 120GB hdd and a better screen and a few other extras but does that make it a challenger for the low cost netbook eeepc or an smaller/lighter/sexier laptop alternative. Personally I have found the eeepc to be more of go anywhere mobile networked device rather than a replacement for a decent laptop. I would never lose my macbook pro. The real difference for me is that I'm not too precious with it because of the cost and ruggedness of the device, and therefore I take more risks and experiment with its usage.
@seoinin good points and I still think the low price point is the real advantage of the EeePC. Anything more than €300 and you start slipping into the "why not get a 'real' laptop" territory. However, I am excited to see the emergence of a range of devices in this form-factor.... very excited. @jbkenn pity I didn't have that factoid for my review ;-p
@jbkenn I was wondering if we could negotiate to borrow/rent/buy your stash of hi-tech bouncers as we want to demo them at our Internet in edu conference in may 22nd and are foreseeing a shortage.
Thanks @festoon for reminding me. Mikes, mine, PatD's and John's makes 4. The more we can get our hands on the better our participant teachers will be able to get to know the form factor and it's potential in schools.
@EirePreneur Just got off the phone with Daithí. Wow! I took the call while I was in the middle of cooking a stir-fry dinner for the family. I listened, talked a bit and listened a bit more while physically finishing cooking, serving to the clan, and even eating my own meal. Never talked to a more interesting, energetic and passionate educator. I'd love my daughter to go to his school.
@seoinin LOL, I knew you'd be infected by his enthusiasm. It's the hallmark of everything he does, whether educating children, running marathons or playing guitar. He's an amazing guy and you're right,... my brother is very lucky to have his kids attending that school.

Like @jbkenn has said, you can take your Asus Eee PC to the top of a telegraph pole without worrying about the problems of dropping it.

I can confirm the eePC does bounce, it slipped off the roof of the Ballinvreena Community Centre today, not a bother on it.

@seoinin any luck getting Daithí? He might be able to bring along his school's 6 units too?

@lnoonan Robocode 1.6 beta works flawlessly on Ubuntu Gutsy on the EeePC

Cool, would like to show it running on the unit as part of the workshop.
I wonder if I can make any purchases with my temporary elevation to management :-)

@seoinin I think your best bet is to phone him - he's taken a week to respond to one or two of my emails !
